Dispatcher
The City of Hays Dispatchers dispatch both 911 and non-emergency calls for Ellis County EMS, Ellis County Sheriff's Office, Hays Police Department, Victoria Police Department, Ellis Police Department, Fort Hays State University Police Department, Ellis County Rural Fire, Hays Fire Department, Victoria Fire Department, Ellis Fire Department and Animal Control.
- Dispatchers work in teams. Each team has a Shift Leader.
- Dispatchers works six 12-hour days and one 7-hour day every two weeks with a 20 minute working lunch. The 12-hour days are worked 6:00—6:00 and the 7-hour day is flexible and may be adjusted with the approval of the shift lead. Teams switch from day to night shift every 4 months. A normal schedule may look like this:

- Dispatchers will be required to work some holidays. If employees work holidays they are compensated extra. If the employee’s regular day off fall on the holiday, employees also receive extra compensation for that day.
- Dispatchers can choose to wear jeans with a City Polo or business casual clothing to work.
Requirements
High School diploma or GED required. This position requires working in a fast-paced environment where quick decisions are vital. The ability to multitask, enter data into the computer system as well as keeping confidentiality & the ability to communicate effectively is essential.
Paid on-the-job training for the right candidate. All Dispatchers are required to live within a 40-mile radius of the City of Hays within 6 months of employment. Job offer is contingent upon pre-employment testing.

Dispatchers are paid bi-weekly. The Hays Police Department will provide its Dispatchers with a step plan. Employees will be given a step on their anniversary month every year. Cost of Living Adjustments will be provided as needed.
Starting wage depends on an applicant’s education, experience & certifications.

Health & Dental Plans: Excellent health & dental plans are available for Dispatchers & their eligible family members. The City subsidizes most of the health insurance premium costs.
Pension Plan: The City is part of KPERS retirement system. KPERS provides retirement, life insurance& long term disability benefits. The employee’s contribution is currently 6% which is refundable with interest if an employee terminates prior to retirement. Employees may also purchase additional life insurance for themselves, spouse, &/or children through KPERS. Visit www.kpers.org for more information.
Holidays: Dispatchers are given 9 paid holidays. If a dispatcher works on a City Holiday, they are compensated 2.5 times their salary. If the Holiday falls on a dispatcher’s regular day off, they are compensated an additional 12 hours of hourly pay.
Longevity Bonus: After five years of employment, dispatchers are provided a longevity bonus each year. The bonus starts at 2%, moves up to 3% after ten years of service and 4% once an employee reaches fifteen years.
Paid Time Off (PTO): Dispatchers use a paid time off system of leave. This should be used for vacation, sick leave, bereavement leave, doctor’s appointments, children’s events, etc.
Short Term Disability: The Hays Police Department is provided short term disability insurance that provides employees with 70% of their base wages while unable to work due to eligible medical conditions for up to six months following a 14-day waiting period. The City pays the full cost of the premiums.

AFLAC: Officers may elect optional AFLAC plans including: Accident, Cancer, Hospital, and Critical Care.
