1. Where do I take tree limbs to dispose of them?: Ellis County residents can take tree limbs to the Ellis County Landfill. This service is free of charge except to licensed tree contractors. Tree limbs are NOT accepted at the City Compost Site.

2. I don't have a pickup; will the City pick up limbs that have fallen off of my tree?: No. Citizens are responsible for the disposal of all tree limbs from trees on their property.

3. Will the City pick up my limbs after a storm or high winds?: The City only picks up limbs after a storm if the City Manager declares the storm to be a City-wide hardship. If you would like to be notified when this happens, you can sign up for City notifications here.

4. Who do I contact if a tree on private property is obstructing my view at an intersection?: Contact the Planning & Development division at (785) 628-7310 or submit the information through "Report a Concern to the City".

5. I need my tree pruned/removed, who do I contact?: The City maintains a list of licensed tree contractors that can be hired at the property owner's expense. All tree work done for compensation must be completed by a licensed contractor within the City limits of Hays. Contact the Parks Department for a current list of contractors at (785) 628-7375 or aleiker@haysusa.com.

6. My brother and I are removing a tree on my property; do we need a license to do that?: Property owners may prune/remove trees on property they own without a license. Property owners may be assisted by friends and family provided the property owner is on site during the entire trimming/removal process.

7. Does the City assist with the cost of tree removals?: The Tree Rebate Program is available for properties within the City limits of Hays. Please review the form for all eligibility requirements. Trees must be removed by a licensed contractor to be eligible. Contact the Parks Department for a current list of contractors at (785) 628-7375 or aleiker@haysusa.com.

8. My neighbor's tree has a dead limb hanging over my fence and he won't remove it. What should I do?: Disputes over trees between adjacent property lines are to be handled by the homeowners. If an agreeable solution between property owners cannot be found, legal action may be required. The City of Hays will handle situations regarding dangerous trees that are a hazard to the general public as it relates to streets, alleys and sidewalks.
