Lost Pets
If you have lost your pet, call Police Dispatch / Animal Control at 785-625-1011. You can view a list of currently secured animals by visiting the Humane Society of the High Plains' PetFinder page.
Visit the Hays Police Department
If we have safeguarded your pet, the first step in retrieving the animal is to visit the Hays Police Department, located at:

After hours and on weekends, please contact the Communications Center at (785) 625-1011.
Pay Shelter Fees
Pay the shelter fee for each night your pet has been in the shelter. Please have the exact amount in cash, check, or money order. Fees are:
- Same day animal pickup - $15.00
- 1 Night Boarding Fee - $25.00
- 2 Night Boarding Fee - $35.00
(The fee increases by $10 each night animal is impounded.)
City of Hays only charges what we are charged through the facilities in which we impound the animals, the Humane Society and area vet clinics.
Visit the Animal Shelter
Take your receipt dated the same day as pick-up of pet to the Humane Society of the High Plains animal shelter.
Owners please do not hesitate to call 785-625-1011 to claim your dogs or cats even if the shelter is closed. Arrangements can be made with an animal control officer or a police officer to get the animals from the shelter even if there is no staff at the shelter.
Show Proof of Payment
You will need to show proof of payment (receipt) and be prepared to describe your pet.
