Duties

The Public Works Department is responsible for:

  • Building Inspection
  • City Planning 
  • Code Enforcement
  • Fleet Services
  • Flood Structure Maintenance
  • Maintenance of Street Signs and Signals
  • Snow Removal
  • Solid Waste Collection
  • Street and Alley Maintenance

Divisions

The Public Works Department is divided into four divisions:

Planning & Development Division

The Planning & Development Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for many activities throughout the City of Hays including Zoning, Building Permits, & Inspections, Contractor Licensing, and Code Enforcement. 

Service Division

The City of Hays Service Division maintains approximately 106 miles of streets and 110 miles of alleys as wells as the city's Stormwater system. 

Solid Waste Division

The Solid Waste Division of Public Works takes care of refuse collection and disposal, recycling collection and processing, composting activities, and the annual alley cleanup program.

Stormwater Division

The Stormwater Division manages the City’s Stormwater Program.  Primary functions include maintaining the City’s stormwater infrastructure, street sweeping, providing public education on how to reduce stormwater pollution, and maintaining compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
