Planning is responsible for the coordination of land development activities through the administration of Zoning and Subdivision Regulations within the City of Hays and the three-mile area surrounding the City. A "joint" City-County Planning Commission, consisting of nine members appointed by both the City and County Commissions, acts on and approves plats and makes recommendations on zoning requests. The Planning Commission meets on the third Monday of each month.
The Board of Zoning Appeals consists of five members and is also appointed by both the City and County Commissions. The Board of Zoning Appeals considers variance applications and special use permits as provided under state statutes. Applications for platting, change of zoning, variance and special use permits are available in the Inspections Office. The Federal Flood Insurance program is also administered through the office of Inspections.
