Three large lakes within 40 to 50 miles of Hays provide some of the best fishing in the state of Kansas. Fishing in northwest Kansas has something for everyone. From winding creeks and streams to big water reservoirs stocked with a variety fighting game fish, our area has it all. The three largest lakes near Hays include Cedar Bluff Reservoir which is know for it's bass fishing, Wilson Lake which is one of the deepest and clearest lakes in the area, and Webster Reservoir which is north of Hays nestled in the Solomon Valley. These lakes provide excellent crappie fishing as well as white bass, walleye and channel cat fishing. Reservoirs in northwest Kansas were restored to normal levels in the early 1990's after Cedar-Bluff-Fishingyears of low water. The flooded timber and vegetation has provided excellent largemouth bass fishing as well as many other popular sport fish. Channel catfish are the most widespread and nearly every stream, reservoir and small ponds have good numbers of channel catfish. For more information on fishing in Kansas please visit the Kansas Department of Wild Life and Parks Fishing website.

Ringnecks thrive in grain fields, wheat stubble, shelterbelts, weedy areas, and the native grasses found throughout our region. The northwest region of Kansas is also popular for dove, prairie dog, rabbits, coyote, quail, waterfowl, prairie chicken, wild turkey, antelope and deer. Kansas is consistently in the top three pheasant harvest states in the nation where about a million birds are harvested annually. Northwest Kansas is known as the "Pheasant Capital of the World," and is a prime location for ringneck pheasants.  Ringnecks thrive in grain fields, wheat stubble, shelterbelts, weedy areas, and the native grasses found throughout our region. Other popular small game in Northwest Kansas include: dove, quail, waterfowl, squirrel, rabbit and prairie chicken.

Hunting--202Local landowners participate in a program with the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department to make private land available to hunters. Hundreds of thousands of acres of land are available to hunters with many prime areas located here in Ellis County. The department posts signs on the property and patrols the area. Hunters must obey the same rules and regulations that apply to public hunting areas. Parking is limited and roads and driveways must not be blocked. Hunters must respect the rights of the property owner and not leave behind trash.  The WIHA land may not be entered outside the posted hunting dates. For a copy of the Walk in Hunting atlas, contact the local KS Wildlife & Parks Department office or www.kdwp.state.ks.us.

Please contact our office for a Free information packet on hunting in our area, or check out the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Hunting website for more hunting information.

Located at its new location at 3000 Sternberg Drive is the all-new Sternberg Museum of Natural History, a department of Fort Hays State University. This museum has been a part of Hays since 1914 when the first curator was appointed.

The museum is named in honor of two generations of the Sternberg family that collected some of the most spectacular fossils in the world. Their finds are in most major museums and have played a dominant role in initiating the study of North American fossil vertebrates. George F. Sternberg joined the Kansas State Teachers College in 1927 and established the fossil collection. After his death in 1969, the museum was named to honor this family that gave so much to the science of paleontology.

At this new four-story dome museum, you will experience a recreated day 88 million years ago when the might Tyrannosaurus Rex haunted the land and an Inland Sea covered Kansas.
Visitors can walk among semi-automated life-sized dinosaurs in a fully restored environment and experience the life of some of the most spectacular creatures that ever lived. The large array of fossils the Sternberg Family found through their studies is on display including the famous "fish-within-a-fish."

The Discovery Room allows children and adults to come face-to-face with specimens from the natural world. Highlights of the Discovery Room include live animals of the Great Plains, an unusual selection of plants, children's science periodicals, a state-of-the- art digital weather station, over a thousand resource books and various computer labs. The museum emphasizes education by hosting many Sternberg-front-2traveling exhibits during the year. This means there is always something new and different to learn about.

The museum is handicap accessible and also features a gift shop.

"Precision Valley Golf Center where the golf season never ends."
The Akers Golf Ranch was the brainchild of Mike Akers and Jason Bell. They cooped an effort to purchase the land, secure finances and built the driving range in 1996. In the spring of 2004 Akers Golf Ranch merged with a group of investors to build Precision Valley Golf Center. The range offers golfers a much needed place to practice and work on their game. The facility features an outdoor driving range which is the only lighted driving range in the area. An 18 hole mini golf course has a 10 foot tall water fall, two fountains, two ponds, as well as several water hazards and many other obstacles.

The 6000 sq. ft building is fully equipped with four state of the art indoor golf simulators that feature 33 of some of the world's most famous golf courses. You can chip, putt, hit your own golf balls with your own clubs all without dealing with the elements of Mother Nature. Precision Valley also has an indoor hunting center that allows you to hunt deer, pheasant, elk, bear and much more. There are two pool tables and one of the largest pro shops in western Kansas with all the leading brands in stock. A great snack bar features appetizers such as pizza, chips and cheese sticks as well as offering a full bar. The inside of the building and all of its amenities are also available for private parties. (Call for details.)
