Northwest Kansas is known as "The Pheasant Capital of the World" with the entire state being among the top three pheasant harvest states in the nation! The northwest region of Kansas is also popular for dove, prairie dog, coyote, quail, waterfowl, prairie chicken, wild turkey, antelope and deer. Hays, the largest community located in the Northwest region of the state, serves as a great overnight location for hunters, with over 1000 motel rooms, more than 60 restaurants and numerous sports supply businesses. The Hays City Sportsman's Club provides trap, skeet, rifle and pistol ranges to members and guests with shooting clinics and registered events are held throughout the year. In 2006 the club celebrated their 30th year and continues to be active with numerous events such as the Pheasant Season Pre-Season kickoff held on the first Friday in November before the opening day of Pheasant Hunting Season. Three registered shoots are held each year (May, July and September) with the Zone shoot usually held the first weekend of May and the Doubles Marathon held the first weekend of July. The club is open to practice every Monday that weather permits. Trophy shoots are held the 2nd Monday of each month and league shoots are held on the remaining Mondays. The club facilities have grown to be one of the nicest in the state and feature 7 trap ranges, one skeet range, a 5 stand range, a rifle range, a pistol range, two clubhouses and the adequate seating for spectators and special events.

Fishing:

Hays is located midway between two premier fishing reservoirs Cedar Bluff to the west and Lake Wilson to the east. Recognized for excellent striped bass and smallmouth bass angling Lake Wilson is a 9,040 acre lake located conveniently north of I-70 (Wilson State Park Office (785) 658-2465). Cedar Bluff, a 6,000 acre lake located 13 miles south of I-70, features outstanding crappie, black bass, bluegill and catfish (Cedar Bluff State Park Office (785) 726-3212). If your aim is better with a camera than anything you'll enjoy the opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife species in the Hays area. Within an hours' drive you will find over 10 lakes, wildlife areas and observation possibilities.
Some of the local favorite areas to go bird watching and enjoy seeing wildlife are: Frontier Park, Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site, Hays Medical Center Fitness Trail, Fort Hays State University Big Creek and the KSU Ag Research Center.

In the spring of 2004 Akers Golf Ranch merged with a group of investors to build Precision Valley Golf Center. The range offers golfers a much needed place to practice and work on their game. It is currently the most technologically advanced golf club fitting center between Kansas City and Denver. Precision Valley Golf Center is fully equipped with four state of the art indoor golf simulators that feature 33 of some of the world's most famous golf courses. You can chip, putt, and hit your own golf balls with your own clubs all without dealing with the elements of Mother Nature. There are two pool tables and one of the largest pro shops in western Kansas with all the leading brands in stock including – Titleist, Callaway, Taylor Mae, Mizuno, Ping, Cleveland, Cobra and Nike. The snack bar features appetizers such as pizza, chips, sandwiches, popcorn and much more, as well as offering a full bar. This is a multi use facility for concerts and all motorsports such as tractor pulls, demolition derbies, tough trucks, motorcycle events and many other functions. The racetrack is a 3/8 mile high bank clay oval dirt track. The racetrack promoter brings in URSS 305 Sprints, IMCA Modified, Stock and Hobby Stock and Bomber races. The grandstand has a seating capacity for more than 4000 people, with restrooms, concessions and a souvenir shop are located on the grounds.

The Fort Hays State University Rodeo Club hosts the NIRA (National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association) rodeo at the college rodeo arena each spring. The event is usually held the third weekend of April and runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Ellis County Fair features rodeo entertainment each summer during the third week of July. The KPRA (Kansas Profession Rodeo Association) rodeo is held in conjunction with a Rodeo Queen Coronation. Lewis Field Stadium is the home of the Fort Hays State University Fighting Tigers. The Stadium also plays host to Hays High School and Thomas More Prep-Marian High School football home games. Lewis Field has also had the honor of hosting the Kansas State High School 2-1 A Football Championships each fall and in 1997 hosted the Kansas Shrine Bowl Game.
