  • The Ellis County High Technology Crime Unit (H.T.C.U.) was formed in August of 2002 in an effort to combat the increasing reality of cyber crime. The H.T.C.U. is comprised of the Ellis County Attorney's Office (Ex Officio), Ellis County Sheriff's Department, Fort Hays State University Police Department, and the Hays Police Department.
     
  • The H.T.C.U.'s Mission Statement
    • Investigations of technology related crimes in Ellis County, Kansas including but not limited to: fraud, embezzlement, fraudulent documents, financial crimes, identity theft, and the various turpitudes in the use of technology, computers, and the Internet.
    • Provide the citizens of Ellis County with a cooperative enforcement unit to enforce state and local laws pertaining to crimes of, or relating to, high technology.
    • Inform and educate the citizens of Ellis County with preventative methods to help minimize the exposure of crimes relating to High Technology.
    • The forensic analysis of technology related systems
       
  • Many different types of crime can be either committed with a computer or by a computer. The crime unit's calls-for-service include, but are not limited to: Identity theft, auction fraud, harassment or threatening emails, and complaints from the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
     
  • Several of the member officers have attended training and seminars directly related to combating technology related crime and the Internet including Basic and Advanced Data Recovery and Analysis courses taught by the National White Collar Crime Center. The Ellis County Sheriff's Department is also the 15th member from the State of Kansas to join the NW3C which includes other international and national law enforcement and prosecuting agencies.
