The City of Hays - City Commission, in an election year, has three open seats for public office.

Interested candidates for City Commissioner are required to file with the office of the City Clerk, located in City Hall, 1507 Main, no later than noon on the Tuesday preceding by ten weeks the 1st Tuesday in April of an odd year. Each filing must be accompanied by the appropriate filing fee ($10.00), or by petition.

A primary election will be held only if seven or more candidates run for the commission seats. The two candidates with the highest vote totals in the general election will serve four-year terms. The candidate with the third-highest vote total will serve a two-year term.

Where to File - Filing by Fee or by Petition

Filing Location

• City Commission Candidates file at City Hall - City Clerk's Office.

Filing Deadline

• By noon on the Tuesday preceding by ten weeks the 1st Tuesday in April of an odd year.

Filing by Fee

• Candidate filing fee is $10.

Filing by Petition

• If a petition is filed in lieu of the filing fee, the petition must be signed by 50 qualified electors of the city or a number of electors not less than 1% of the ballots cast in the last general city election, whichever is less.

Declaration of Intention (Filing Form)

• Candidates obtain and file this form with the City Clerk.
• City Clerk forwards this completed form, along with the filing fee to the county election office.

Statement of Substantial Interest

• City Candidates obtain and file this form with the City Clerk.
• Completed form is due no later than ten (10) days after the candidate files.
